The original 17-inch PowerBook was the first laptop to ship with a 17-inch display, and was also the first Mac to have a FireWire 800 port. Powered by a G4 PowerPC processor (7455 for 1 GHz, 7447 for 1.33 GHz and up), these solidly-built laptops are capable of handling just about any task normally given a laptop. They also feature the "ambient light sensor" which automatically adjusts keyboard illumination and screen brightness based on the light available in the vicinity.

• They are able to run OS 9 ('Classic') applications under emulation, but they are not 'dual-bootable' (i.e. they must boot into OS X).
