The 15" MacBook Pro was introduced to replace the venerable PowerBooks, ushering in the new era of Intel processors on a Mac laptop. If you're using OS X exclusively and you're a bit of a power user, a certified pre-owned MacBook Pro (also known as a used MacBook Pro or reseller refurbished MacBook Pro elsewhere) is the way to go (the smaller, slower MacBooks are worth considering as well). If you still need OS 9 (or prefer a built-in modem), then the PowerBooks are worthy machines.

Also, don't forget to consider the 17" version of the MacBook Pro... the extra screen size often more than makes up for the slightly heavier load.

Since chip makers are having a difficult time increasing the speed of their chips, they are building additional "cores" into them, allowing for greater speed. The MacBooks come with two cores, with the difference between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo being a larger L2 cache and other technologies that enhance the speed (not something that you'll notice in most applications a great deal, however). Otherwise, the models are all very similar, with similar battery life and networking, and of course Magsafe power connectors, scrolling trackpads, and integrated iSight video cameras.
